Dark City Adventures

Terror!
Dark City Games produces some excellent products at an affordable price. Value for money, they are as good as it gets (or can get) in our hobby. The newest release from Dark City Games is Terrors of the Night. The stand alone game comes in a ziplock bag and includes system rules, three adventures, the only map you will need and cut-apart counters representing characters and all the creatures you will encounter. All you need add are some six sided dice and some way to take a few notes (key words).
The three adventures found in Terrors of the Night share a location, the city of Redpoint, which is a recurring locale for many of the Dark City Games adventures, and they all take place primarily at night - in the dark. As with several of the Dark City Games products there are squishy, squiggly tentacles and demons which threaten humanity. A rogue sorcerer, missing people and a bounty to be earned sets the stage for the first of the three mysteries. The second adventure takes the characters below the streets of Redpoint and into the sewers. Having received this product during the holidays, I have yet to play the third one.
The Dark City Games adventures all use a three d6 roll under system for combat, spell casting, skills and saves. The system itself is contained in the final few pages of each module or as a free download from the Dark City Games website. Combat uses a tactical display and involves figures moved about on hexes. The figures, or counters if you prefer that term, are included in the ziplock along with an ingenious map that accommodates all the encounters through use of clever graphics. I prefer the fantasy titles, but Dark City Games also makes science-fiction and wild west themed products as well.
The Dark City Games are each stand alone products, although they make use of a common world setting - at least this is true in the fantasy titles I have played. Each adventure product can be played solo or with a group of other players - with or without someone acting as a referee/umpire. There are even a couple of free introductory adventures available for download on the Dark City Games website complete with printable maps and counters. All of the adventures I have had with Dark City Games have been tense, rewarding and steeped in a flavor that frequently puts me in mind of some of my favorite fiction - Howard, Lovecraft, Burroughs, Leiber, Wagner, etc.
